from When Slammers in Waikiki closed, we lamented the loss of one of our favorite late-night sports bars. It was a comfortable place to lounge on tacky velvet cushioned booths, watch TV and share food with friends. Owner and chef Neil Nakasone has delivered a reincarnation in the form of Kanpai Bar and Grill, in the old Tio's location on Ward Avenue. Kanpai offers good ambiance for a sports bar, especially during the middle of a big game. Along with a full bar, Kanpai has six beers on tap, ranging from $3.50 to $5.50, including Shock Top Belgian White, a beer with a hint of orange and coriander. During happy hour, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, beers are a dollar off. When it comes to food, try the kimchee ribeye steak. It's a deliciously fatty steak cut pupu style, served on a sizzling platter and topped with kimchee and two sunny side up eggs.

- Free Lot and Nearby. There is a small parking lot behind the building, which fills up quickly at night. Additional parking is available across the street in the Ward Gateway parking lot (where the Sports Authority store is).
