California Pizza, Pearlridge Mall Phase II, spaghetti cooked with capers, served with chicken (forgot name of dish) but this was a first for me (spaghetti n capers). Killer!

I remember eating at Flamingo Chuckwagon. I always remember the prime rib cutter never used to smile, but very friendly whenever i asked for the end cuts. As for the restaurant, it never seemed the same after I came back from college (2006). I still enjoyed eating the chicken cutlet (I never really tried anything else), but over the years it seems like the portion got smaller and the gravy changed as well. It has been awhile since eating at the Pearl City location, but the last time I ate their the food was just about the same at the Kapiolani location. Now to go to Eagle's Cafe for those who live in town and don't want to drive to Pearl City.

Great blog, Ed! I am a fan of Boulevard Saimin but my favorite saimin shop is Shige's in Wahiawa. I totally laughed when I saw your pictures of Flamingo Chuckwagon. My husband's family loved to go there for special occasions or for no reason at all. Remember the horse statue in front of the restaurant? I have pictures of my son sitting on the horse. Nice stroll down memory lane!

I didn't know that Honolulu had any "Celebrities" on this island. The pics look good. What type of Celebrities does Honolulu have?

What happened??? Was in Kaimuki and ono for Japanese food, so went to check this place out to find the place dark, sign at entrance to atrium turned inside out and window signage gone! So disappointed! Went to Happy Days then Cafe Laufer to compensate...guess gotta go elsewhere to quench my hunger for Japanese food...

I saw just the regular digital version at Ward, and I'm satisfied that I got my $10.50's worth (it was pointed out that I'm paying for both the new digital projector and James Cameron's managing to make the most expensive movie EVER). You're right, the dialogue isn't great and the plot borrows from lots of other stories and themes... but it's sooooo pretty.... I can't wait to see it again!
rasakhawaii commented on Party pics: Climax at the Hyatt Fall 2009
This Party WAS OUT OF CONTROL!!! Cant wait for the next Climax. I think I had like 8 Patron shots by 11:00 pm for free. Props on the Laser light room in the back it was like a Rave

Monka, if you taste them side by side (and I can take you), you will taste the difference. I can't say that I taste the red dye on regular char siu. Maybe the baking brings it out?
Auggy557 wrote about Kelley O'Neils
One of the first places I walked into when I arrived in April. I was not disappointed. It has the charm adn appeal of a local watering hole up until the time the band shows up. Then the people come from everywhere! I haven't heard any bad music being played there! The beer selection is great, the bartenders and staff are great and the food is exceptional because it's NOT typical bar food! The Shepard's Pie (both versions) is really good and the corn beef sandwich is very flavorful, but sometimes you might encounter a few bites of 'tough' meat! So wash it down with another beer! If they would just install a few more TV's with the sound turned up, I would do all my NFL watching there! Give it a try. If you like the music scene and a a 'fuller house', show up after 9:00 PM. It will be a good time!

I had no idea the red dye affected the taste! Is it the same for regular char siu meat too? I'm a meat and flavor girl, so I could do without too much bread as long as the filling is there. My favorite are the lupchong and curry chicken from Royal Kitchen, or the baked manapua and dim sum from Island Manapua. Thanks for the reviews!

Half a sausage? What kind of operation is that! That's like serving half a hot dog in a bun!

I love turnip cake! My friends, not so much. Yes, you are a Chang.
ReannaW wrote about Mai Tai Bar at the Royal Hawaiian
I am the type of person who doesn't like to be surrounded by a lot of people when I am enjoying a night of drinks. AKA, the club scene is not for me. Mai Tai Bar at the Royal Hawaiian is pretty secluded, and did not get overwhelmingly crowded once. My boyfriend and I were able to enjoy a romantic night with some drinks. He stuck to beer, while I tried various different cocktails. My favorite was the Ty Ku 'Asian Caiprioska'. Very refreshing. I would recommend this bar for any couple on vacation.

The Blue Ribbon Bar and Grill makes their patrons feel as if it is their second home. Everyone (staff and patrons) are quick with a smile, and just as quick to bring you into the fold if you happen to return. The drinks and food are standard fare with the emphasis on simplicity in the preparation of their pupus. The karaoke selection is in a class by itself. For those who yearn for songs from the '50s, '60s, '70s, etc., the Blue Ribbon can't be beat. Songs come out quickly, and are evenly spaced amongst the patrons when at all possible. The owners and managers treat all patrons as if they were family. Parking on busy evenings is a chore, but well worth the effort. A "local bar" with class and ambience. Check it out!

Have you tried Queen Street Cafe on Queen Street, kind of next to American Savings Bank & the pink building? For $6, you can choose between their Kiawe BBQ steak & chicken, Mochiko chicken, poke bowl, etc. The best is their roast pork with gravy, special on Tuesday & Thursday only. Ask for gravy over the garlic mashed potato, suuuper yum! Can drinks are 50 cents each. One plate can feed my husband & my 17 year old son, with left over! Way to beat recession. Long line at lunch hour, open from 10 AM to 6 PM.
Mark808 wrote about 8 Fat Fat 8 Bar & Grille
Don't let the the humble exterior fool you, this bar and grille has something for everyone who wants to just chill out. The ownership and staff members are all friendly and welcoming. The food is outstanding. Personal favorites includes 8 Fat Fat 8 chicken, edamame (soybeans), fried rice, sauteed lettuce, and gizzards (yes, gizzards). The beer selection is one of the most extensive with a variety that will impress. Personal favorite is the Boddington's that they started to bring in after I inquired about it a while back. To top it all off, they play sports events on tv including UH Warrior games, they have darts, a pool table, and of course KARAOKE!
