Tucked away on McCully Street, Chiko’s Tavern is an informal neighborhood bar, where aloha isn't just a word used to impress tourists. There's refreshingly little pretense here, despite the recent fame of its resident performer - Hoku Zuttermeister - the winner of several 2008 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, including Male Vocalist of the Year, Most Promising Artist and Favorite Entertainer of the Year. Zuttermeister's solo debut album, "'Aina Kupuna," also was named Hawaiian Music Album of the Year.
Here at Chiko's, Zuttermeister is treated less like a sought-after musical star than as the butt of raucous jokes or the subject of a toast designed to embarrass him about his newfound fame. He takes it all with good-natured humor, laughing and playfully punching his friends in the audience. This is the warm, friendly atmosphere at Chiko’s. Everyone - famous or not - gets treated with the same consideration and camaraderie.
