While Honolulu may not be London when it comes to having a thriving underground hip-hop scene, it still has something to offer those who appreciate this indie sound. Artists here perform a wealth of styles, from jazz-hop to techno-hip-hop and weirdo, at various venues around town. Here's where to go to hear some of the best underground performers.
Honolulu's underground hip-hop scene
We may not be London, but you can still hear this indie sound

Jazz Minds Art & Cafe
1661 Kapiolani Blvd. - HonoluluWhile the parking is atrocious and the drinks are pricey, it's definitely worth $5 to sit in an amber-toned lounge and chill with jazz music. What’s better is that sometimes, instrumental hip-hop artists grab the mic and actually spit out competent verses. Not Blackalicious quality, but not bad neither.
NextDoor
43 N. Hotel St. -
Honolulu
Although this club is temporarily closed, its worth mentioning because every once in a while, the brick walls and high ceiling pay proper respect to underground and indie hip-hop acts. Given that most of the equipment is already on stage and that the sound system begs for a really talented wordsmith, the draw has not been as strong as it should. As you slosh your way through twentysomethings following whatever ironic statement is fashionable, the thought that hip-hop is dead begins to creep up on you. But, then someone like Busdriver will roll through and give the audience lyrical prestige and the full potential of a Portland-style club.
The O Lounge
1349 Kapiolani Blvd. - HonoluluEvery first Friday, The O Lounge hosts an MC battle with a $100 prize. Now, this is both parts democratic and playing with fire as mic holders have a varied amount of styles and skill levels. For every KRS-One, there are usually twenty Mush Mouths in garish modern-day minstrel garments. The event is more or less a glamour show rather than a talent search, but at least it’s something. Ever since DJ Jake the Snake graduated from KTUH, there have been drastic drops in open mic nights.
Tropics Cafe
1020 Auahi St. -
Honolulu
Hip-hop at the Trops is one of the better events in terms of quantity. Tempo Valley, Audible Lab Rats and Ion Mike have all performed here, and the two-Fridays-a-month deal is always a sure sign that there are going to be a few good acts. Plus, it's free for those 21 and over and only $3 for 18 to 20 year olds. Tropics Cafe also happens to be one of the better passed-over venues on the Island and drinking there while listening to live hip-hop makes for a full night and a cheap date.
Higher Ground Coffee and Music Cafe
70 Kukui St. - WahiawaA coffee shop that becomes a hip-hop venue on the North Shore is like a hippie’s wet dream, but the music is worth the trip. Hawaii hip-hop mainstay Tempo Valley performs here and there are clips on YouTube for those curious about the quality. But quality, all-ages hip-hop shows are rare and beggars can’t be choosers. It's also worth mentioning that they sell very cheap coffee and the environment is warmer than your Starbucks.
