Fudge-filled cupcakes

‘Tis the season to be guilt-free, right? Metromix threw dietary caution to the wind (when don’t we?) to scour the island for a baker’s dozen best bakery treats. O joy! O jealousy from friends. (The nice ones got our scraps.) Ho ho ho.
We scarfed more sugar than we normally eat in a year. Seriously. More icing, more fruit fillings, more crusts. Cupcakes for breakfast, pies for lunch, that sort of thing — oh, and some mean sugar crashes and scary full-body buzzes. And this was without the obvious picks like Liliha Bakery cocoa puffs, malasadas from Leonard’s, Champions or Agnes, or Napples from Napoleon’s.
Phew. Thank goodness for deadlines. We couldn’t cover the entire island before that last sugar crash brought us to our knees, but we took a big bite, starting with these Waialua fudge-filled cupcakes from Hokulani Bake Shop for $3.25. Filled cupcakes? Where have we been? And we said fudge, not pudding. The real deal. A very yummy start.
