Sea squirt
April 7, 2009
We first discovered this item when eating monkfish stew at various Korean restaurants. For some reason, we’ve only seen it in monkfish stew, so we wondered: Who came up with the idea to cook with this the first time… and what made them think it was a good idea to do it again? It’s got a tough outer covering — much like shoe leather — and a hard, marble-like substance squishing around inside. If you are able to bite into it, a salty liquid squirts out of it.
We weren’t sure what a sea squirts were, but it seems that they are sort of like barnacles. Again, we’re not sure who looked at these things and decided they’d be great in monkfish stew, but hats off for thinking outside the box. Or something.
