Though Hawaii's Portuguese population is large, it's up to one place — Agnes Portuguese Bake Shop — to represent for Portuguese cuisine. Agnes is the only place to find Portuguese-style baked goods; and though it's one of many bakeries that serves up piping hot malasadas, many argue that Agnes ultra-dense version are the most authentic of the bunch. They also sell Portuguese bean soup and vinha d'alhos (picked pork, a favored celebration food) around the holidays. As suits the Portuguese worldview, the place is sparkling clean, and the coffee is good.
