Kahunamatata, I've been looking for Milk Gut here on Oahu but haven't found it yet. It was on my original list for bizarre foods!

Ok, so I've had the dinaguan and the 1000-year-old duck egg (in Jook at Legend Dim Sum at 8 in the morning along with chicken feet and tripe!!! Try starting your day ladat!!) Weirdest thing I ever ate was when I was living on Lana'i and one of my chef friends made this cheesy meat ... which I learned later was grilled/baked COW'S UDDER. Where the heck do you find that out here?! There are durian trees all over Lana'i and do they stink!! I bought a jar of durian fruit at Daiei before moving back to Nebraska in 2002, but could never bring myself to eat, just use it as show & tell. I also ate foie gras on Lana'i one night & would do that again, even though it is the worst possible thing for the duck. I have an itching to try balut just to say I ate it. Seriously, though, the next time you go try bizarre foods, you call me and I'll go with you. I may make faces and be loud, but we'll have fun!!

Good choice! I haven't visited this place since my mother moved to Oregon... and there is nothing wrong with licking the cup... just do it with style. --primo

Love this pic! :D So pretty, I guess the Changs have the "good looking" gene :)
ilovekailua commented on It’s a dessert craze, yo!
A big Mahalo to Melissa Chang and her two buds for providing us Fro Yo lovers with a great overview of the current offerings on Oahu...plenty of great Yogurt places to choose from. I'd love to hear their comments or others' on which are the best places to hang out and why. Sounds like they liked Menchie's or Red Mango's yogurt best, with YL a close second and Yogurtland University best for hanging out. Any other recommendations out there???

I'm so in touch with the coffee shops around here in St. Paul, I can't believe I never tried more of them back home--I had only heard of 3 out of the 10. I'll hit them when I get back. (And I love the photos) :)

Well that explains those supercharged nutcracker Xmas trees! Been wondering about those places near my home .. now I'll be trying them for sure!

Liliha Bakery pancakes are phenomenal. I hate pancakes, but I just can't resist these.

Finally- a true critique of the best of the best on Oahu. Thank you, metromix, for recognizing the need for real restaurant reviews! I can't wait to try the places I haven't been to yet.

Ditto on the pumpkin latte. In fact, for flavored coffee, Coffee Talk is the best. Especially love their Butterscotch flavor. Liz, Diane, Cardin and the rest of the crew have kept this business easy-going and welcoming for over 10 years. Kudo's for not succumbing to the chain stores.

Wow! They all look so good, I am going to have to eat pancakes for breakfast, lunch and dinner to try all of these place.
clyboy commented on How do our picks stack up?
Okay, you have to try Cafe Kaila in Market City Shopping Center. There's something in the mix that makes it a treat to eat by itself. The maple syrup is a bonus. Liliha Bakery is also a top pick if you can get there when it's not crowded. I used to like iHop's Corn Cakes but they took it off the menu. If you like your cornbread toasted, then you would've liked their corn cakes.
ORANGEisLife commented on Good to Grill Bananas Foster Pancake
I am not a pancake fan so I had the Bananas Foster French Toast yesterday and it was eyes roll to the back of your head good.

@Shawn390 - I would recommend you skip Boots & Kimo's...waaaaayyyyy over-rated as far as pancakes go. You're better off just buying the sauce and making your own pancakes at home. We were so disappointed to wait in the line there for really bad, chewy pancakes. Unless of course, you like chewy and rubbery pancakes -- then B&K is the place for you. My wife cringes just driving past the place now.

Food is plentiful and some is quite good while a lot is mediocre. Service is poor if you are a tourist and not know by the staff. I arrived when no one else was even there yet about 75 were seated ahead of me while I waited about 45 minutes. Beverage service is exceedingly poor and expect to be ignored by servers.

Thanks for the budget-eating tips! Will check this place out and stretch my dollah here on my next trip home!
BobBackland commented on The owners
Food is decent, John Viernes needs to work on his customer relations. He needs to stay in the back and cook.
