    Caterpillar Roll, etc....

    Date taken: September 2, 2011

  • the entire restaurant has been refurbished after having changed hands in 2009. The owner, Samuel Bendenoun, grew up in France and New York City, attended the American University and culinary school in Lausanne, Switzerland. He is a veteran of a number of local eateries, including Indigo, Arancinco's and others. And he is, of course, a surfer, so Haleiwa seemed the right choice of home for him. He hired a local sushi chef, Ken Holden, and the menu ; which was never very Brazilian to begin with, except for the ceviche ; is now more typically contemporary Japanese izakaya. And it's very well done. Service was swift and casually gracious. Our menu began with a dish we just had to have: deep-fried strips of avocado in a pleasingly crisp breading. We tried, too, the signature bonsai roll, another roll called a lemon drop. Surf videos play while you eat and the music leaks over from the Artist house next door. A truly relaxing place, and the sushi was both creative and excellent.

Eh. I don’t feel strongly about it either way. I don’t hate it or love it, I wouldn’t recommend it or dismiss it, it just is.
