When Slammers in Waikiki closed, we lamented the loss of one of our favorite late-night sports bars. It was a comfortable place to lounge on tacky velvet cushioned booths, watch TV and share food with friends. Owner and chef Neil Nakasone has delivered a reincarnation in the form of Kanpai Bar and Grill, in the old Tio's location on Ward Avenue. Kanpai offers good ambiance for a sports bar, especially during the middle of a big game. Along with a full bar, Kanpai has six beers on tap, ranging from $3.50 to $5.50, including Shock Top Belgian White, a beer with a hint of orange and coriander. When it comes to food, try the kimchee ribeye steak. It's a deliciously fatty steak cut pupu style, served on a sizzling platter and topped with kimchee and two sunny side up eggs.
